Rev. Dr. Darren Phelps serves as the chair of the NBA Development and Marketing Committee of the Board of Trustees. He attended Virginia State University BA Education & MA Psychology, DMin United Theological Seminary.  He is a seasoned Lead Pastor with 27 years of experience of increasing responsibility in congregational leadership, community activism, church plant, and prophetic witness. Committed to shepherding individuals, church/ministry plants (re-visioning). Engaging the community in social justice ministry and outreach. Skilled in devising strategies to sustain long-term operations goals. Expertise in spiritual counseling, education, and mentorship. Proven success in advancing denominational goals and increasing community engagement in the congregation. In addition, Pastor Darren is a former senior non-profit executive and spent 10 years as an educator (grades K-3). Pastor Darren is an active (regionally/nationally) Disciples of Christ Clergy. Currently he is based in Melbourne, Florida where he is the Senior Minister, First Christian Church.

Why did you say “yes” to serving on the NBA Board of Trustees?

We are called to lead the way for Disciples to: create a just world; strive for reconciliation; and build compassionate and caring communities.

The NBA’s vision statement is “creating communities of compassion and care.” What does that mean to you?

As a faith leader, the vision of NBA, ‘creating communities of compassion and care,’ spoke to my heart. NBA will pave the way for Disciples to move beyond their walls to serve all God’s people!

Reflections on Giving, September 2019

What inspires you to support a cause or organization?

The mission of an organization is one that I must hold deeply. Supporting a faith-based entity that focuses on the health and wellness of children and adults is a passion I wholeheartedly embrace. Let me share this guiding quote: “Gentleness, self-sacrifice, and generosity are the exclusive possession of no one race or religion.” —Mahatma Gandhi.

Consider the following phrase, how would you complete…”When I think about generosity, whether in spirit or in action, I think about…?”

I believe one of my life’s purpose is to share with others the blessings God has bestowed upon me. I prefer to share my generosity privately yet I do know that being recognized for giving can sometimes inspire others to join in generosity.

Why do you support the mission and work of the NBA?

NBA has consistently lead the way in serving our church and community. I remain excited at the ways we ensure our work continues to grow, expand and serve many generations to come. Our positive impact is felt throughout the life of our Disciples church.

What would you say to someone considering making a gift to the NBA?

We are called to serve with diligent faith. The mantle of servant leadership has been given to us. Would you prayerfully consider giving a gift to support the needs of our church and community? Your gift will positively impact the lives of those we are called to serve. NBA is called to serve as the health and social services ministry of the Christian Church (Disciples of Christ)!
