Over the past several years, I have increasingly seen social media posts and been privy to private conversations in hushed tones among Christians about the importance of mental health. For many years the prevailing stance within the church has been one of silence. “Jesus will fix it” is the motto.

People ask me why I’m here: “You had the luxury of choosing where to live and what to do. At any time, you could choose to leave. You don’t have to stay there if you don’t want to.” You’re right. When I moved here, I did have a choice. But now that I’m here, I don’t want out.

This accepted Item for Reflection and Research invites our Church to study and discern how to respond to this disturbing practice.
