NBA Dr. Mark E. Poindexter Wellness Fund: A Fund to Support Body, Mind, and Spirit

Dr. Mark E. Poindexter

Disciples Pastor Mark Poindexter believes that “the church needs to be a place, where people can safely and appropriately share their story and experience an expression of welcome.” His hope is to “break the stigma associated with mental illness.”

Westside Christian Church in Portsmouth, Virginia, is honoring the pastoral ministry of Pastor Mark by establishing a fund that will help support NBA’s mental health and wellness initiative. Over the years, Mark has worked on several occasions with this program. In his advocacy work, Mark is committed to ensuring that more support and learning resources can be available for clergy and faith leaders. In 2018, Mark gave a powerful written testimony about battling severe depression and being a suicide survivor. He has also offered liturgy and sermon resources on the importance of the Church being a place of compassion and support for individuals living with mental illness and related traumas. With NBA, Mark worked with church leaders and mental health professionals to increase the resources available for clergy and faith communities so that wellness and informed care is accessible for all. As we celebrate the years of ministry that Mark has provided, we encourage you to also generously support Mark’s commitment to mental health and wellness by giving to this fund.

About the Mental Health and Wellness Program

We believe creating communities of compassion and care begins with an integrated vision of wellness that prioritizes a holistic approach centered in justice, equity, theology, spirituality, and clinical awareness. NBA’s work is centered in resourcing Disciples health and social service entities and reaches out to the whole denomination through general church partnerships, regional collaborations, support for congregations, seminaries, and community-based organizations.

NBA’s Mental Health and Wellness Initiative takes a collaborative approach that is rooted in:

  • A sound and liberating theological understanding of mental health and wellness
  • Effective and practical strategies for spiritual coping practices
  • Accessible and clinically-informed education and resources

Thank you for your generous support!
