Pacific Grove, CA—Blue Theology is a place where current science in marine biology meets a theology of creation justice. We host groups to engage in experiential learning, service projects, and contemplative practice with God’s marine creation. We believe that ocean conservation is a spiritual practice. We become Blue Theologians, or faithful advocates for a healthy ocean, through our learning and serving experiences in ocean conservation while fostering heart connections to the sea.

Grants Awarded

2018-19 Mission & Ministry Grant: Blue Theology for Farm Labor Camp Youth ($7,000)
Youth & Young Adults
In partnership with the Catholic Diocese of Monterey, the Monterey Bay Aquarium, and LiMPETS, the Blue Theology Mission Station will host 8 groups of rural farm labor camp youth for Blue Theology learning/serving experiences. Two years ago, they hosted 5 farm labor camp groups in this very worthwhile program. After training their staff and volunteers, high school-aged youth will be transported from the rural farm labor camps to the Christian Church (Disciples of Christ) of Pacific Grove’s Blue Theology Mission Station for all-day immersion in Blue Theology. Meals and transportation will be provided, as well as backpacks, notebooks, hats, and water bottles. The program includes a spiritual tour of the Monterey Bay Aquarium, participating in a long-term scientific data collection of an indicator species (sand crabs) at Asilomar Beach, presentations on the current health of the Ocean, and a worship service focused on creation care. They plan to program for 8 groups of 25 participants each, plus adult chaperones. This program is designed to inspire the at-risk youth to develop spiritually and to foster good relations with the church. Also, to create good creation stewards and perhaps spark an interest to further pursue learning in science and theology.
2019-20 Mission & Ministry Grant: Blue Theology for At-Risk Youth ($10,000)
Youth & Young Adults
At-risk urban youth are transported to Blue Theology for week-long learning and serving experiences. Partnering with Monterey Bay Aquarium and All People’s Community Center to provide meals, transportation, supplies, and hands-on learning and worship based on creation care.
Fall 2021 Mission & Ministry Grant: Blue Theology Mission Site ($3,000)
Youth & Young Adults
The Blue Theology Mission Station provides learning/serving experiences in ocean stewardship. The program invites youth from affluent and underserved neighborhoods across the country to learn more about God’s call to care for the ocean. It is through this experience that youth will be educated on how to care for the ocean with a focus on the gulf which is near Texas City, TX.
Fall 2022 Mission & Ministry Grant: Harbor Christian Church Blue Theology Project ($3,000)
Intergenerational
Blue Theology is a ministry of Harbor Christian Church in Newport Beach, CA that utilizes its location across the street from the Back Bay of Upper Newport Harbor to serve underserved populations of youth and older adults. Our ministry showcases our partnerships with local environmental organizations such as the Marine Mammal Rescue Center, the Black Bay Science Center, Crystal Cove State Beach, the Muth Interpretive Center, and the Aquarium of the Pacific.
