I’m Living Out in L.A… / Estoy viviendo en Los Ángeles, CA…

Five months ago, if you would have asked me where I would be, I would have given you a completely different answer than living in Los Angeles, California. I was in the process of completing my bachelor’s degree in history at the University of Texas Rio Grande Valley, and I was determined to finish in the next year. Then, boom!! I get a life-changing call from a long-time Hispanic pastor and friend of mine, Gabriel Lopez. Thus, NBA XPLOR became an option for the next 10 months of my life.

Si hace cinco meses me hubieras preguntado dónde estaría, te habría dado una respuesta completamente diferente que vivir en Los Ángeles, California. Yo estaba en el proceso de completar mi licenciatura en Historia en la Universidad de Texas Río Grande Valley y estaba decidido a terminar en el próximo año. ¡Entonces, Boom!! Recibo una llamada de un pastor hispano y amigo mío, Gabriel López, que cambio mi vida. Por lo tanto, NBA XPLOR se convirtió en una opción para los próximos diez meses de mi vida.

“I know the plans I have for you,” says God! I’ve completely put my trust in Him, took an enormous leap of faith, and said “yes” to the call of XPLOR intern in Southern California. Although I was excited to be moving, there was a huge issue that was tugging at my heart as the approaching date of departure was arriving. Did I really answer God’s call, or am I just really excited to be moving out to the mecca of the entertainment industry?

¡”Yo sé los planes que tengo para ti”, dice Dios! He puesto completamente mi confianza en Él, he dado un enorme salto de fe, y he respondido “sí” al llamado de interino de XPLOR en el sur de California. I spoke to God every day about how I needed signs and affirmation for this decision, as if I were going to receive a phone call or an email from Him saying, “Yes, everything is clear for takeoff.” Then, God did exactly that. God has a funny way of putting things together. My parents spoke to me and told me how excited they were for this opportunity. My brother told me that he would have participated in the XPLOR program if he had the chance, but there was one affirmation that set everything moving.

Hablé con Dios todos los días sobre cómo necesitaba confirmación para tomar esta decisión, esperaba recibir una llamada telefónica o un correo electrónico de Él diciendo: “No temas, todo está listo para que comiences”. Entonces, Dios hizo exactamente eso. Dios obra de muchas maneras. Mis padres me hablaron y me dijeron lo emocionados que estaban por esta oportunidad. Mi hermano me dijo que él hubiera participado en el programa XPLOR si hubiese tenido el chance de hacerlo, pero hubo una afirmación que puso todo en movimiento.

Pastor Gabriel Lopez, co-pastor at East Whittier Christian Church, talked with me about how XPLOR gives me the tools and resources to work on spiritual vocation and to really just explore myself. After a long talk over the phone, I realized this is where God was calling me to move. My decision was not about moving to L.A., but moving closer to the call that God has placed in my life.

El Pastor Gabriel López, co-pastor de la Iglesia Cristiana de East Whittier, habló conmigo acerca de cómo XPLOR me da las herramientas y recursos para trabajar en la vocación espiritual, y de realmente conocerme mi mismo. Después de una larga charla por teléfono, me di cuenta de que ahí es donde Dios me estaba llamando. Mi decisión no era acerca de mudarme a Los Angeles, sino de acercarme al llamado que Dios ha puesto en mi vida.

I’ve been in Los Angeles for five months, and I am as happy as can be about my life-changing decision. I’ve come to realize that I’m just a part of God’s bigger plan for this program. Alongside my journey in NBA XPLOR are my roommates, who have equally put their trust in God. The best part of God knowing the plans he has for us is that they’re plans to benefit you and not harm you, plans to give you hope in a future.

He estado en Los Ángeles por cuatro meses, y estoy tan feliz sobre la decisión que tome. Me he dado cuenta de que únicamente soy una parte del plan más grande de Dios para este programa. Me acompañan en este viaje mis compañeros de habitación, que al igual que yo han puesto su confianza en Dios. La mejor parte de saber que Dios conoce los planes que tiene para nosotros, es que son planes de bien y no de mal, planes para darte esperanza en el futuro.

I don’t know what lies ahead, but for now I’m XPLORing the plans God has for me.

No sé qué me deparara el futuro, pero por ahora estoy XPLORando los planes que Dios tiene para mí.
