NBA and CCH Meet with Affordable Housing Leaders in South Idaho
FOR IMMEDIATE RELEASE
Twin Falls, Idaho: June 2014 – Christian Church Homes (CCH) and the National Benevolent Association (NBA) of the Christian Church (Disciples of Christ) met in southern Idaho for conversation with leaders of Disciples-related, affordable housing properties about strengthening partnerships to support affordable housing options for senior adults in southern Idaho.
“This meeting and the focus on affordable housing is a fantastic opportunity for the NBA and CCH to explore meaningful partnership models for the future,” states Rev. John Rodenberg, CCH Vice President of Philanthropy and Mission Implementation.
Primary goals of the gathering included the opportunity for representatives of affordable housing sites to gather and support one another’s work and hear about the supportive resources of the NBA and CCH. The meeting provided a forum for exploring the challenges facing the housing units including, board development and governance issues, management strategies and short and long-range maintenance concerns of the sites.
Rev. Rebecca Hale, NBA Vice President for Mission and Ministry, notes, “The National Benevolent Association continues as the HUD sponsor for a number of Disciples-related affordable housing sites across the country. It is our intention to explore productive partnerships in order to live faithfully into the responsibilities of that sponsorship. These partners include regional ministers, HUD board leadership, Disciples congregations, and partners such as CCH, who has experience and expertise in affordable housing that can strengthen the mission and work of the HUD sites.”
The senior population will double to 80 million people by 2025 and there is already a shortage of affordable housing. The NBA and CCH are committed to provide supportive programming related to healthy housing situations and nurturing communities of care. At the meeting in Twin Falls, affordable housing representatives and Disciples leaders conveyed their insights and hopes for safe and caring housing communities for older adults. Maureen Newton, Chair of the Syringa Plaza Board in Burley, Idaho, shared, “It just does so much for our spirits to realize that there are people out there who care and want to help us. The ability to gather with other housing leaders from different facilities was awesome! We feel so positive about the future.”
